'If We Have To': Tesla Cybercab Might Come With A Steering Wheel After All
"Tesla pitched its futuristic Cybercab as a pedal-free, steering wheel-less entry into an autonomous future. In fact, just last week CEO Elon Musk told the world that the car would launch next year and definitely would not have either. However, in an interview with Bloomberg on Tuesday, Tesla chairwoman Robyn Denholm said the company may make some concessions and install them in the car after all."
"The reality is, under current regulations, Tesla won't be able to make the Cybercab a mainstream hit without the proper safety controls. That means installing a steering wheel and pedals if it plans to sell more than 2,500 units per year and can muster up approval to do so legally. That figure is set by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Part 555 temporary exemption process."
Tesla's Cybercab originally was designed as a pedal-free, steering wheel-less robotaxi intended for autonomous operation. Current U.S. regulations limit sales of vehicles that do not meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards to 2,500 units annually under NHTSA's Part 555 temporary exemption process. Tesla chair Robyn Denholm indicated the company may install a steering wheel and pedals to meet regulators' expectations and enable higher-volume sales. CEO Elon Musk previously said the Cybercab would launch next year without controls. Adding a steering wheel and pedals would allow Tesla to scale production beyond the exemption cap and seek legal approval for mainstream sales.
