NYC Marathon pacers guide thousands of runners to glory
"ON THE FIRST Sunday of November, more than 50,000 people -- elite runners, Broadway stars, celebrities and amateurs alike -- will lace up for the TCS New York City Marathon. Among them are 90 volunteer pacers for New York Road Runners (NYRR), the nonprofit that organizes the race. Tasked with guiding and encouraging runners through the five-borough 26.2-mile course according to the finish time posted on their handheld signs, pacers are the loudest unsung heroes of the marathon."
"Candidates must: Finish at least three marathons or five half-marathons Run the course of the race they will be pacing at least three times Complete a marathon in the past two years with a time of at least 30 minutes faster than the group they will be pacing for. Or have finished a half-marathon at least 15 minutes faster than their pace group's pace."
More than 50,000 runners will compete in the TCS New York City Marathon on the first Sunday of November, covering a 26.2-mile five-borough course from Staten Island to Central Park. Ninety volunteer pacers work for New York Road Runners to guide pace groups to target finish times, alerting runners to water stations, gel intake and pacing strategy. Pacers must meet strict experience and recent-race requirements, run the course multiple times, and complete a four-week training course to learn pacing techniques. Live broadcast coverage is available on ESPN2 and Spanish coverage on ESPN3.
