In Star Trek: Khan Episode 8, "Original Sin," Lear uncovers that the marooned Elboreans, rather than Captain Kirk or Starfleet, precipitated the disaster. The Elboreans aided Khan and the Augments in building an escape craft while operating a propulsion system that destabilized the planet. Elborean leader Delmonda describes a generator that manipulates subatomic particles and releases power sufficient to bend space and time. Lear enlists the USS Excelsior, Captain Sulu, and Tuvok in 2293 to examine rediscovered logs and reassess culpability.
