"Honest, paywall-free news is rare. Please support our boldly independent journalism with a donation Illinois Governor JB Pritzker is calling for federal agents to pause immigration enforcement in the Chicago area until after Halloween, amid widespread condemnation of violent arrests and confrontations with residents. "GOV. JB PRITZKER: I've sent a letter to Kristi Noem and to the Department of Homeland Security leadership, asking them to pause all of their federal agent operations for the entirety of the Halloween weekend. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker requested that federal immigration enforcement in Chicago be paused through the Halloween weekend, citing risks to children and disruptions to families. Pritzker asked DHS and South Dakota leadership to halt operations to avoid exposing trick-or-treaters to tear gas and other chemical agents. Border Patrol chief Gregory Bovino underwent a five-hour deposition in a lawsuit alleging mistreatment of protesters, journalists, children and immigrants. Aaron Reichlin-Melnick described Bovino's approach as aggressive and militarized and raised concerns about rapid detention expansion, normalization of racial profiling, and arrests including U.S. citizens.
