Ambrose Patrick McMullen, in his 60s and originally from Cootehill, County Cavan, died in an underground explosion at the Endeavor mine in Cobar, New South Wales. Two women, both in their 20s, were brought to the surface; one later died and the other was airlifted to hospital with minor injuries and shock. Police said emergency services were called at approximately 3.45am after reports of two people critically injured and confirmed a man in his 60s had died. All three workers lived in Cobar. Mr McMullen emigrated in the mid-1980s and had lived in Australia with his family. Local councillor Carmel Brady and the Cootehill Chamber offered condolences and described him as well known and fondly remembered.
