Tuttosport: A three-way battle - Allegri still search for final midfield piece
"The central midfield department is the deepest in AC Milan's entire squad, and Massimiliano Allegri is still searching for the perfect trio. As Tuttosport (via MilanPress) report this morning, the right midfield position in the 3-5-2 the only spot in the starting line-up without a designated starter. Youssouf Fofana held it at the start of the season, but as the months passed, others got their chance."
"As the weeks went on, Samuele Ricci and Ruben Loftus-Cheek emerged as candidates for the right mezzala role. Now, the Frenchman, the Italian and the Englishman are competing every weekend for a starting spot. The numbers so far showing that Fofana is far ahead with 16 starts in that role compared to the Englishman's five and the Italian's two. However, in the last eight games, Fofana has started four times: the other four have been shared equally between Ricci and Loftus-Cheek."
"In terms of goals, there is very little to separate the trio. There is one each for the former Monaco and Torino duo, and two for the ex-Chelsea man, who has also played as a centre-forward like against Bologna. The other two midfield roles are already filled, as Allegri is unlikely to do without Luka Modric and Adrien Rabiot, two key players for him and the team."
AC Milan's central midfield is the squad's deepest area and the right mezzala position remains unsettled. Youssouf Fofana, Samuele Ricci, and Ruben Loftus-Cheek are competing regularly for that role. Fofana leads with 16 starts at right mezzala, Loftus-Cheek has five, and Ricci two. In the last eight matches Fofana started four times while Ricci and Loftus-Cheek shared the other four starts equally. Goal contributions are similar: one each for Fofana and Ricci and two for Loftus-Cheek, who has occasionally featured as a centre-forward. Luka Modric and Adrien Rabiot occupy the other midfield roles, while Ardon Jashari is being developed as a regista.
