'We had already closed a deal' - Boban makes Milan revelation about Liverpool star Szoboszlai
"He started out as a No.10, always playing behind the striker at Salzburg and Hungary. It was a problematic position, but now he's transformed into a pure No.8, which was the only way he could become a champion. Extremely talented, he sees the game and touches the ball like few others in the world."
"We [Milan] had already closed a deal for him, but then it didn't happen. A wonderful player, I'm happy he won the war with himself and became a real player. He didn't have the pace and one-on-one to play as a number one, he just couldn't."
Dominik Szoboszlai emerged as a transfer target for AC Milan nearly six years ago during the 2019-20 season when Ralf Rangnick was expected to replace Stefano Pioli. Rangnick had submitted a wish list including Szoboszlai, but neither the manager nor the player arrived at Milan. The club retained Pioli and won the Scudetto in 2021-22. Szoboszlai remained linked with Milan while at RB Leipzig but ultimately joined Liverpool in summer 2023 for €70m. Zvonimir Boban confirmed Milan had nearly completed the signing, praising Szoboszlai's transformation from a number 10 to a number 8 midfielder and his exceptional technical abilities.
