California's third largest farmers market gains 40-year lease in Marin County
"On Tuesday, the Agricultural Institute of Marin, a nonprofit organization that operates certified farmers markets around the Bay Area, got approval from the Marin County Board of Supervisors to operate a permanent market at the Marin County Civic Center. The forthcoming project is slated to be named the Marin Farmers Market at the Center for Food and Agriculture, with an opening set for 2027."
"He shared that the project has been in the works since at least 2014, when AIM originally pitched the idea to the city. In 2017, Marin County signed a memorandum of understanding with AIM to debut a two-story indoor market that included a restaurant, bakery and commercial kitchen, among other features, but the agreement ended in 2020 when AIM "failed to meet a condition that it raise at least $15 million by that date," according to the Marin Independent Journal."
The Agricultural Institute of Marin received county approval for a 40-year lease to operate a permanent Marin Farmers Market at the Marin County Civic Center, with a planned 2027 opening. The market will occupy a roughly 3.7-acre triangular parcel (about 161,172 square feet) and include shaded structures, ADA-compliant restrooms, hydration stations, seating, parking for up to 250 cars, and space for about 220 vendors. The market currently ranks among the largest in California and will add Tuesday hours to its existing Thursday and Sunday schedule. The project has been in development since 2014 and previously pursued a larger indoor plan that stalled in 2020. AIM plans further phased development beyond the initial site improvements.
