Doctors trialling 'poo pills' to flush out dangerous superbugs
Briefly

UK doctors at Guy's and St Thomas' hospitals are pioneering the use of freeze-dried faecal pills to combat superbug infections. These pills contain stool samples from healthy donors rich in beneficial bacteria, aiming to replace harmful bacteria in patients suffering from antibiotic-resistant infections. Early trials show promise, enabling better gut health while reducing the impact of superbugs that can escape to cause severe infections elsewhere in the body. This innovative approach builds on previous success with faecal transplants, paving the way for more extensive studies to confirm efficacy.
"The focus is on the bowels which are the biggest reservoir of antibiotic resistance in humans," says Dr Blair Merrick, highlighting the critical need for innovative treatments.
"New research has focused on patients who had an infection caused by drug-resistant bacteria in the past six months," supporting the targeted approach of the trials.
