At Beacon Hill, the urgency to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 has prompted the introduction of the "Freedom to Move Act," which aims to cut emissions by reducing vehicle miles traveled. Supporters argue that simply increasing electric vehicle use is insufficient for decarbonizing transportation, the biggest emissions contributor in Massachusetts. The bill mandates state transportation goals and the formation of an interagency council to coordinate efforts. Some lawmakers, however, view this approach as overreaching and costly, prompting debates on effective emission reduction strategies amidst federal rollbacks on environmental standards.
EVs are certainly a major piece of the puzzle, but we should be careful not to rely too heavily on one decarbonizing strategy for the transportation sector.
The bill would require the state Department of Transportation to set goals for reducing the number of statewide driving miles.
