Europe is set to experience significant growth in zero-emission buses and coaches, with projections indicating a total of 108,000 by 2030 as per a report from the European Commission. The analysis highlights a major role for battery electric vehicles (BEVs), which are expected to encompass around 459,000 of the 534,000 total zero-emission heavy-duty vehicles anticipated on the roads. By comparison, only 27,000 zero-emission buses were registered from 2012 to 2024. The transition is critical, as conventional diesel improvements alone will not meet future targets.
By 2030, zero-emission buses and coaches in Europe could reach 108,000, forecasted by the European Commission and analysis partners, indicating strong growth in electric vehicle adoption.
The projected scenario suggests that battery electric vehicles will dominate, with a target of over 80,000 new zero-emission buses and coaches deploying from 2025 to 2030.
