Caltrans unveiled the updated Bay Area Bike Plan, aiming to enhance cycling infrastructure by adding more bike lanes alongside state highways. Currently, about 14% of the original 2018 bike plan has been completed, with 80 projects finished and another 200 underway. The agency plans for an additional 270 projects in the future, such as expanding bike lanes on the Bay Bridge. The initiative receives support from sustainable transportation advocates, who emphasize the need for more urgent policymaking to prioritize protected bike lanes.
"Freeways are going where a lot of people want to go, they're connecting city A to city B and C and D. And so having an alternate alongside a freeway is a real boost to people."
"Policymakers in general are hesitant or unengaged on building protected bike lanes. And so we need more policymakers including Mayor Lurie, including the Board of Supervisors really prioritizing protected bike lanes around the city."
