ICE Raid Creates Chaos For Korean Companies
"Friday's immigration raid on Hyundai and LG's joint Metaplant in Savanna, Georgia, has certainly dominated this weekend's car-related news. Last week, U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement agents stormed the under-construction factory and detained 475 workers, the vast majority of them South Korean nationals. ICE claims that those detained have visa issues and were not authorized to do any work in the U.S."
"Response to the raid in South Korea hasn't been all that kind, with images of Korean nationals shackled and arrested making the rounds and sparking criticism as to why Korean companies are investing in the U.S. at all, according to some news reports. In the meantime, South Korea's diplomats may head to Washington D.C. to try and smooth things over between the two countries, while chartering a plane to bring all of its detained nationals home."
Europe's International Mobility Show Germany (IAA) opened with numerous brand debuts and strategic announcements poised to reshape European and global automotive markets. Some manufacturers signaled retreats from full-electric commitments while others accelerated all-in electrification strategies. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents raided the under-construction Hyundai-LG Metaplant in Savannah, Georgia, detaining 475 workers, most of whom were South Korean nationals, and alleging visa violations and unauthorized work. Graphic images of shackled Korean nationals provoked criticism in South Korea and debate about continued Korean investments in the U.S. Diplomatic engagement and potential repatriation flights are being considered as Korean firms reassess U.S. expansion plans.
