In 1985, the author embarked on a hitchhiking journey from Adelaide to Canberra for a birthday party, encountering numerous generous strangers along the way. After a chance reunion with an old friend, rides from an accommodating young couple and a benevolent elderly man enriched the experience. The author reflects on these fortunate encounters that emphasized humanity's kindness, making the adventure not just a trip but a journey through unexpected warmth and generosity. The trip illustrates the risks and rewards of hitchhiking in an era when it was still common.
I was young, foolhardy and totally broke, so I hitchhiked from Adelaide to Canberra. Every ride was a stroke of luck, revealing the kindness of strangers.
With the encouragement of a friendly couple, I accepted their offer for the night, which showed me the generosity that strangers can extend.
The elderly gentleman who picked me up went out of his way to help, reminding me that kindness can be found in the most unexpected places.
