In the summer of 2023, journalist Dan Rubinstein embarked on an innovative 1,200-mile journey from Ottawa to New York City on an inflatable paddleboard, which took 11 weeks to complete. He paddled down the Ottawa River through Montreal, followed the Hudson River to New York, and returned via the Erie Canal and the Great Lakes. Through this experience, Rubinstein explores the human connection to water and dives into relationships communities have developed with their local waterways while promoting the benefits of engaging with 'blue space.' His adventure was fueled by a long-standing passion for paddleboarding and a desire to connect personally with aquatic environments.
You're more intimate with the water, because you can get in and out of it. And then the perspective is different because you're standing.
I set up reporting trips to Belize and British Columbia, where I was able to learn from local paddlers and write about it.
