"That's why it's important to make your phone boring on purpose. Whenever we talk about how to break your smartphone addiction, a trick that's commonly cited is to set your phone to gray scale. The problem: making your phone black and white and gray all the time makes it less useful during the times you actually need it. That's why I set up an automation that sets my phone to gray scale when I arrive at home."
"To get started, open the Shortcuts app on your iPhone. We're going to make two shortcuts, one for when you get home and one for when you leave home. Name both appropriately. For the first shortcut, which will trigger when you get home, search for the action Set Color Filters. Add it and make sure that the shortcut is set to turn color filters On."
Phones provide useful features outside the home but can be highly distracting at home. Turning the display to grayscale reduces visual appeal and helps focus on other activities. Constant grayscale reduces usefulness when away from home. An automation can enable grayscale upon arrival at home and revert to color when leaving, preserving utility on the road while minimizing distractions at home. Apple Shortcuts can perform this without third-party apps or manual taps. The setup requires creating two shortcuts to turn color filters On and Off and configuring location-based automations to trigger them.
