The second category, AI-on-RAN, aims to position AI applications closer to the edge by deploying them directly on the RAN. Samsung is pursuing comprehensive AI integration in the radio access network through active leadership in the AI-RAN Alliance. The approach separates three paths: AI-for-RAN to enhance performance, capacity, and energy efficiency using tools such as ESM, RSO, LBM, KAD, and RAI; AI-on-RAN to run AI functions directly on RAN elements at the edge to reduce latency and backhaul; and AI-and-RAN to run concurrent RAN and AI workloads on combined compute-and-communications platforms to increase utilization and create new monetization opportunities. The effort emphasizes clear interfaces and performance benchmarks to guide deployment across 5G and toward 6G.
