"Building a wunderkammer is a surrealist exercise, in a way,"
"I tend to gather objects I like, '90's toys, luxury vases, miniature chairs and a bunch of skulls. The cabinet of curiosity is a decor, and each case of it is a decor inside the decor, where small characters play small sketches."
"It was obviously a kind of Madonna, holding a little boy, and surrounded by cute and creepy objects,"
"I wanted to describe a nuanced approach of maternity, and confronting cuteness and fear was my way to do it,"
A Paris-based artist uses the cabinet of curiosities motif to assemble objects—'90s toys, luxury vases, miniature chairs, and skulls—into staged, surreal scenes. The charcoal-and-graphite drawing 'Wonders' nods to Raphael and was created for the 2019 Dorothy Circus group show Mother & Child. The composition presents a Madonna-like mother holding a little boy; both wear animal nose masks while tiny, eerie vignettes unfold among densely organized shelves. The work deliberately balances cute and creepy elements to offer a nuanced approach to maternity. 'Wonders' became the cover of the monograph Made in the Dark. Monographs are published periodically to accompany solo shows.
