Artists who defy categorisation take pride of place at Independent 20th Century
"Sometimes the runway for these shows is two or three years,"
"It's an organic process to some extent. If there's an important exhibition that isn't travelling to New York but should be, we'll try to bring a show by that artist to the fair."
"She was not very familiar to many people until two years ago, when she was featured in the ,"
"I wanted to give people here a full view of her work,"
The Independent 20th Century fair opened to VIPs with dealers offering deep dives into canonical artists and jewel-box surveys by shape-shifting Modernists and Postmodernists. Postmodernist stands proved especially memorable, giving visitors exposure to under-recognized mid-century abstractionists, singular Post-Minimalists and artists who worked against prevailing trends. Stand timelines often span two or three years and are assembled organically to present exhibitions that do not travel to New York. Galerie Lelong presented eight paintings by Elda Cerrato tracing her evolution from gestural abstraction to grid-based Epopeya del Ser Beta, the Maps and Multitudes works, and El sueño de la casita propia, depicting crowds, maps, landscapes and rural homes against bright gradients.
