The 36th Bienal de São Paulo will feature 120 artists and is curated by Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung. Inspired by Conceição Evaristo's poem "Da calma e do silêncio," the Bienal's theme is "Not All Travellers Walk Roads-Of Humanity as Practice." The selection process drew on bird migration, analyzing how various bird species navigate and migrate, to encourage a transcending of national boundaries in art. The Bienal will include various forms of art, such as performance and installation, taking place at the Ciccillo Matarazzo Pavilion from September 6, 2023, to January 11, 2026, aiming to broaden public engagement with art.
By studying birds' navigation skills, their impulse to migrate across land and water, their survival instincts, their expanded sense of space and time, and their urgency and agency, we were able to engage with artistic practices in different geographic regions while reflecting on the meaning of bringing humanity together in the context of the Thirty-Sixth Bienal de São Paulo.
This methodological process helped us avoid classifications based on nation-states and borders.
