""Did you walk by the grass that smells like burnt popcorn at the entrance?""
""I was walking through the gardens the other day, and it smelled like brown butter,""
""The smells of the garden are intended as part of the experience.""
""The way the concrete is treated has its own feel and also a smell. There's a haptic quality to the project that goes from smooth to rough,""
Calder Gardens opens on Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia opposite the Rodin Museum as a designed, multisensory art space focused on experience rather than a traditional museum format. The outdoor gardens incorporate distinctive plant scents, described as burnt popcorn, coriander and brown-butter aromas, and soft, soil textures. Interior spaces emphasize fresh wood and treated concrete to evoke domestic and haptic qualities. Herzog & de Meuron designed inviting wooden and concrete surfaces with varied textures. The Calder Foundation prioritized a contemplative environment that avoids a single-artist mausoleum feel and allows visitors freedom in how they engage with the work.
