Dozens of Venice Biennale Artists Demand Israel's Exclusion
"The Venice Biennale's complicity with the attempted destruction of Palestinian life must end. No artist or cultural worker should be asked to share a platform with this genocidal state."
"Signing this letter is the minimum I can do in the face of genocide and ecocide. Our voices, our demands, our non-hegemonic stories, though plural and diverse, become stronger when woven into collective gestures of care and resistance."
"The Biennale's administration is actively ensuring the presence and participation of a state that was founded on the ethnic cleansing and illegal occupation of Palestine."
Nearly 200 artists, curators, and staff participating in the 61st Venice Biennale have signed an open letter calling for Israel's exclusion from the event. The signatories include prominent pavilion artists and central exhibition participants such as Yto Barrada, Carolina Caycedo, Gala Porras-Kim, and Alfredo Jaar. The letter states that the Biennale's complicity with Palestinian destruction must end and that no cultural worker should share a platform with what signatories describe as a genocidal state. The Art Not Genocide Alliance collective organized the letter, arguing that the Biennale administration actively ensures participation of a state founded on ethnic cleansing and illegal occupation of Palestine. Human rights organizations have designated Israel as an apartheid state.
