"After more than 25 years of debate and delay, we have moved beyond words and into action. This commission is not just a technical body; it is a commitment to historical integrity and a long-awaited bridge to justice for those whose heritage was stolen."
"Finally, Switzerland has a commission,"
""just and fair solutions""
""alternative dispute resolution mechanisms for resolving ownership issues""
Simonetta Sommaruga will chair the Commission for Historically Problematic Cultural Heritage, beginning work on 1 March, to evaluate claims for art wrongfully acquired during the Nazi era and cultural heritage transferred in colonial contexts. The commission starts more than 27 years after Switzerland endorsed the Washington Principles, which encouraged provenance research, identification of Nazi-seized art, pursuit of "just and fair solutions" with original Jewish collectors and heirs, and the establishment of "alternative dispute resolution mechanisms for resolving ownership issues." Swiss awareness of gaps in national structures grew after the 2014 Cornelius Gurlitt inheritance and controversy over the Bührle collection, highlighting a need for formal claims processes.
