"At the time of the dinner party, Epstein had already served 18 months in jail after pleading guilty in 2008 to charges including soliciting prostitution from a minor in Florida. Epstein made a plea deal with United States prosecutors that gave him immunity from federal charges, which became public information in 2009. By 2012, the financier had reportedly turned to philanthropy to counter "bad press" about his sexual crimes."
Emails released by the Department of Justice show that Jeff Koons attended a September 4, 2013 dinner at Jeffrey Epstein's Upper East Side residence after Epstein requested his presence. Koons and his wife accepted the invitation via email; the guest list included Woody Allen and MIT professor Neil Gershenfeld, who had collaborated with Koons. Koons attended upon Gershenfeld's invitation and had no relationship with Epstein beyond the dinner. Epstein had earlier pleaded guilty in 2008 to soliciting prostitution from a minor, served 18 months, secured a non‑federal plea deal, and by 2012 pursued philanthropy amid bad publicity.
