Piped Like Cake Icing, Ebony Russell's Luscious Vessels Evoke Emotional Celebrations
Briefly

Ebony Russell, an Australian artist, utilizes bakery tools to form colorful vessels that explore the intersection of art, memory, and experience. Her work emphasizes the emotional capacity of materials, inviting viewers to reflect on their memories through the tactile and visual aspects of her creations. Initially inspired by cake decorations, she turned her focus to the fluid application of clays through piping techniques, which brought immediacy and a sense of drawing in three-dimensional space. Her current exhibition, Frivolous, is showcased at Martin Browne Contemporary in Sydney.
Russell's practice is founded in both the relationship between form and function and the nature of the vessel itself as a container for memory and gesture.
I was searching for a way to build with clay that felt more fluid and intuitive, and when I started using piping bags, I loved the immediacy and texture—it felt like drawing in space.
