Biscuits & Banjos, a new music festival curated by Rhiannon Giddens, took place in Durham, N.C., celebrating Black music and culture. The event featured performances from renowned artists and included historical components like a tour of Black Wall Street, panel discussions, and dance events. Photojournalist Cornell Watson documented the festival, expressing how it empowered Black individuals to reclaim their joy within folk and Americana music. His favorite moment was capturing the Carolina Chocolate Drops' reunion, illustrating the warmth and vibrancy of the community at the festival.
I loved the idea that Biscuits & Banjos unapologetically centered Black people, and I wanted to document how we were experiencing this invitation to reclaim and take up space here.
It's hard to pick one because the "Sweet Molasses Juke Joint" party photos are giving so much energy... I dragged my camera shutter to make light trails from the light that was reflecting on them.
