The Art Fair Zohran Mamdani Would Love: NYC's Affordable Art Fair
"A century of fairs, galleries, and auction houses catering almost exclusively to the 1%-ers has left most people believing-wrongly-art ownership, let alone collecting, is not for them. New York's Affordable Art Fair -the art fair Mamdani would love-destroys those notions. Art ownership, and even art collecting, is for everyone."
"Few industries-perhaps yachting or horse racing, maybe F1-so deeply entrench an atmosphere of wealth into their operations. Gatekeeping. Velvet ropes. 'If you have to ask you can't afford it' sensibilities. The New York art world could use an injection of affordability as well."
New York City's newly elected Mayor Zohran Mamdani campaigned on affordability across housing, childcare, transportation, and groceries. The art world similarly needs affordability solutions, as it has historically catered exclusively to wealthy collectors through gatekeeping and exclusionary practices. The Affordable Art Fair, which began in London in 1999 and expanded to New York in 2002, directly addresses this by making art ownership and collecting accessible to everyone. The fair operates in 16 cities globally with spring and fall shows in New York. The spring 2025 edition runs March 18-22 at the Starrett-Lehigh Building, featuring approximately 90 galleries presenting thousands of works across multiple mediums. General admission costs $40, with free entry Thursday March 19 from 6-8 PM with art supply donations benefiting NYC public schools.
