Katie Wakeman learned welding after a neighbor fixed her car seat on the condition that she learn the trade. Early relocation to Windsor, Ontario placed her near a welding school, and her first welding job came in Oakland. An architect connection led to a peacock-themed gate commission in the Castro, which became an instant neighborhood sensation and launched a cascade of commissions. Subsequent projects, including work for a senior dog rescue, amplified her visibility across interconnected San Francisco communities. Each gate installation becomes a neighborhood event that draws residents to watch and converse.
