"The war in Ukraine feels much closer to us here than further west,"
"I left Ukraine after the war started, three years ago, and now live and work in Vienna,"
"But I want to give a voice and a space to artists who are from this zone."
"If Ukraine falls, Russia won't stop. We mustn't give up, because otherwise Putin will just continue on to Berlin!"
Vienna Contemporary, held 11 to 14 September in Vienna, concentrated on Eastern Europe with 97 exhibitors from 24 countries, including many Central and Eastern European galleries. Kateryna Lysovenko left Ukraine after the war began three years ago, now lives and works in Vienna, and won the Münze Österreich Prize for large-scale, brightly hued figurative paintings; she is represented by Warsaw’s TBA gallery. A curated Zone1 highlighted emerging artists who are Austrian or work in Austria. Galleries expressed dismay at the crisis on the region’s eastern borders but remained determined to promote artists amid shaky market conditions and modest sales.
