"I was very sceptical in the beginning. My heart's been broken too many times with art fairs here,"
"I've certainly been pleasantly surprised by the commitment of the fair organisers. This fair has been a catalyst for a number of collectors who have reached out to us who knew Untitled was happening. Just the excitement of it seemed to spur them to make decisions on buying other things."
Sales during the VIP preview of Untitled Art Houston were uneven, with lower-priced works selling particularly well. The event created curiosity about Houston and hope that a new fair could catalyse renewed national appreciation for the city's art scene. Two previous fairs, the Houston Fine Art Fair and the Texas Contemporary Art Fair, folded after rivalry and failed to build the local market. Longtime dealer Robert McClain was initially sceptical but praised the organisers' commitment and reported renewed collector engagement. McClain Gallery sold John Alexander's Life on a Merry-Go-Round for $125,000 and placed two Dorothy Hood paintings at $75,000 each. Houston retains a strong market for regional primary material.
