"There is pressure to get this right across the globe. People will have expectations [for the piece]. It's not that I see my task as slavishly responding to what other people want because after all, this will only work if it's a good sculpture."
"purposefully avoiding coming to any firm decision about how this work will look"
"going to be influenced by what's coming in from interested parties"
"The design of that coin face has been something that millions of people will see; even though it's the smallest thing I've made, it's the most replicated,"
Martin Jennings has been selected to create a statue of Queen Elizabeth II for St James's Park as part of a larger memorial by Norman Foster. The memorial will also include a figurative sculpture of the Queen with Prince Philip at Birdcage Walk and a Prince Philip gate. The project has a provisional public construction budget of a323m- a346m excluding VAT. Jennings, based in the Cotswolds, treats the work as a work in progress, intends to avoid firm decisions initially, and plans to accept input from the Queen Elizabeth Memorial Committee, Foster + Partners and the royal family. Jennings previously produced a bust of the Queen Mother and an effigy of King Charles III for coinage.
