Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: JR Ritchie Ks Seven
"He fell behind a bit too often in counts, but was fortunately getting the Sounds to swing over his sinkers and hit them for ground balls, and the Sounds laid off plenty of well-placed fastballs on the edge of the strike zone that went for called strikes. Four of Ritchie's seven strikeouts in this game were called strike threes, two of those on painted fastballs, but Nashville's third time through the order they stayed more aggressive on pitches in the strike zone."
"JR Ritchie cruised through the first five innings of his start and seemed to be on his way to a dominant final line, but the third time through the order bug bit him hard and he gave up two runs and five hard hit balls in the sixth inning. Ritchie's command of his curveball and slider weren't terrific in this game and he often left them over the plate or a bit too far off to get batters to chase,"
Ian Anderson started for Columbus while JR Ritchie started for Gwinnett. Both pitchers delivered solid outings but neither team won. JR Ritchie allowed six hits, three runs (all earned) over six innings, walked two and struck out seven, lowering his ERA to 2.98. Ritchie cruised through five innings but surrendered two runs and five hard-hit balls in the sixth after the third time through the order. Ritchie's curveball and slider command was inconsistent, leaving pitches over the plate or too far off to induce swings, reducing swing-and-misses. He relied on sinkers to induce ground balls. Gwinnett produced one run but lost 3-1 to Nashville.
