Barcelona celebrates 10km La Merce race
"IN the midst of the weeklong celebrations lighting up Barcelona, more than 14,000 runners lined up on the morning of Sunday, September 21 to participate in another edition of the special La Mercè race, an event that marks the beginning of the fair in the Catalan capital. Despite the rainy weather, participants showed up bright and early for the race, beginning at 8:30am, and started their stretching and warmups for the big event. The La Mercè race, spanning 10 kilometres, introduced a new route this year after more than two decades with the same formula."
"Runners pushed through the challenge despite the suffocating September heat and the rain. The race headed down Carrer València, to the iconic Passeig de Sant Joan and the Arc de Triomf at the end of it, along Passeig de Lluís Companys and Passeig Picasso, before finally reaching the main road overlooking the sea. Passing by the Christopher Columbus statue, the race continued to Plaça de les Drassanes where the most physically challenging part of the race began: a two-kilometre uphill run, in the latter half of the race."
More than 14,000 runners took part in the 47th La Mercè race in Barcelona on the morning of Sunday, September 21, marking the start of city fair celebrations. The event began at 8:30am despite rainy conditions and a hot September day. The 10-kilometre course adopted a new route after more than two decades, starting at Carrer Aragó and Pau Claris in Eixample and finishing at Plaça de Catalunya. The route passed Carrer València, Passeig de Sant Joan, the Arc de Triomf, Passeig de Lluís Companys, Passeig Picasso and the seafront, including a challenging two-kilometre uphill stretch at Plaça de les Drassanes before the final approach via Plaça Universitat to Plaça de Catalunya.
