Fake Berlin Wall fragments on sale as souvenirs?
"People wasted no time and started hacking away at the monstrosity with hammers and chisels. Those people chipping away at the former border barricade were known as "Mauerspechte," or wall woodpeckers. By June 1990, most of the Berlin Wall had been taken care of by bulldozers. Only a few sections of it have survived to this day; at the official Berlin Wall Memorial or the East Side Gallery, for example. Still, fragments of the Wall keep turning up in large amounts all over the city."
""There definitely are fake bits of wall that are made of plaster," explains Julian Sacha in conversation with DW. Most of the pieces on sale are genuine, though, and he should know: His company is the main supplier of authentic pieces of the Berlin Wall. He and his brother Sebastian run Urban Products Sacha Ltd. in the Berlin district of Reinickendorf."
When the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, crowds immediately began chipping away at it with hammers and chisels, earning the name Mauerspechte or wall woodpeckers. By June 1990 most of the Wall had been removed by bulldozers, leaving only a few sections at sites like the Berlin Wall Memorial and the East Side Gallery. Fragments continue to appear across the city and in thousands of souvenirs sold at museums, shops, hotels and online. While some pieces are plaster replicas, most on sale are genuine. Urban Products Sacha Ltd., a family business since 1992, supplies major souvenir chains and ships worldwide.
