This beloved S.F. quartet is disbanding after 40 years. Here's where to see its final Bay Area concert
Briefly

The Alexander String Quartet, a cherished San Francisco ensemble, is set to play its final concert on May 4 at Kohl Mansion before relocating to the East Coast for concluding performances. Founded in 1981, they became notable as the first American quartet to win the Portsmouth International String Quartet Competition in 1985. Over the years, they became integral to the local music scene. Remaining member Sandy Wilson shared that the decision to disband was not initially intended, influenced by his planned retirement and discussions with other members about future changes.
"They've meant a great deal not just to the area but also to the chamber music world at large... It truly is a family feeling with the Alexanders."
"It was not ever our intention that this would be the disbanding of the Quartet... the decision to disband was left up to Grafilo, Lee and Samuel."
