Stage 5 of the Tour of Turkey was canceled after riders protested unsafe conditions caused by heavy rainfall. Initially set to run 151km from Marmaris to Aydın, the stage started with a neutralized opening due to wet roads, but escalating rain led to the decision for complete cancellation. Safety was cited as the priority by race organizers, following complaints from riders about the treacherous conditions compared to ice. The event is expected to continue with stage 6, weather permitting, as competitors prepare for a challenging uphill finish.
Due to rain, wet road conditions, and the increased risk of crashes, the Commissaires Panel held a meeting with team and rider representatives and decided to cancel the stage.
The rain only got worse during the stage. The safety of the riders is our highest priority.
Stage 2 winner Tibor Del Grosso had already complained about the 'insane' slippery roads after rain had fallen on stage 4, comparing the Turkish roads to ice.
Weather permitting, the Tour of Turkey is set to continue on Friday with stage 6 in Selçuk and a 4.2km, 8.4% uphill finish.
