Russia and Belarus held joint Zapad military drills across Belarus and Russia with about 7,000 troops, including 6,000 Belarusian soldiers. A Kalibr missile was test-fired from the nuclear submarine Arkhangelsk in the Barents Sea, with the strike launched from an underwater position. Moscow and Minsk characterized the exercises as defensive simulations of a response to an invasion. NATO states along the alliance's eastern flank viewed the drills as threatening after alleged drone incursions into Polish and Romanian airspace. Poland, Latvia and Lithuania stepped up security, closed borders and conducted counter-drills. Britain deployed fighter jets to fly air defence missions over Poland. Belarus invited foreign media access and dismissed NATO concerns as nonsense.
