Indian village swallowed by mudslide: What happened and why?

A severe flash flood in the village of Dharali, Uttarakhand, has resulted in more than 100 people being reported missing and at least four confirmed dead. The disaster was triggered by a cloudburst, causing a massive mudslide and debris flow. Emergency teams, including the army and disaster response forces, are engaged in rescue operations. The India Meteorological Department noted that extreme rainfall patterns will persist in the region due to ongoing heavy rains that exceed cloudburst thresholds.
More than 100 people are missing and at least four people have died after flash floods swept through the village of Dharali, in the north Indian state of Uttarakhand.
A massive mudslide struck Dharali village in the Kheer Gad area near Harsil, triggering a sudden flow of debris and water through the settlement.
Flash floods in Uttarkashi were triggered by intense rainfall known as a cloudburst, causing the Kheerganga river to swell, at around 1:30pm local time.
The India Meteorological Department warned that heavy rainfall will continue for the next few days.
