A literary center named for author Larry McMurtry breathes life into his Texas hometown
"preserve and perpetuate this remarkable, immense book collection,"
"He got married inside here. He directed in his will that his ashes be kept here forever and ever. He wrote in the morning and spent all of his time the rest of the day pricing books, curating books, writing comments in books, and cherishing these books."
"I've never known anyone who loved books as much as Larry McMurtry,"
Larry McMurtry built Archer City into a notable book destination with four Booked Up locations holding more than 400,000 rare and used books around the courthouse square. After McMurtry died in 2021 the bookstore closed and Archer City lost its principal tourist draw. Booked Up has reopened as the Larry McMurtry Literary Center, open on weekends and periodically hosting retreats. The center seeks to preserve and perpetuate McMurtry's vast book collection and to grow into a regional literary destination comparable to Rowan Oak and the National Steinbeck Center. McMurtry's novel Lonesome Dove won the 1985 Pulitzer Prize; film adaptations of his books won multiple Oscars.
