Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler are reuniting for a new Gruffalo book, set to be released in September 2026, marking their first collaboration in over two decades. The untitled story will bring back beloved characters from 'The Gruffalo' and 'The Gruffalo's Child', both massive successes in children's literature. Donaldson expressed that the initial challenge of developing the sequel was ignited by a campaign from the National Literacy Trust, leading to a renewed creative process. Scheffler, surprised by Donaldson’s clever new text, eagerly agreed to illustrate the book, underscoring their longstanding collaboration.
It's always a challenge to write a sequel, Donaldson said. I had the basic idea for the story a long time ago but couldn't think how to develop it.
Never say never—a lesson learned for me who, whenever asked, denied the possibility of another visit to the deep dark wood.
The new story sees the return of much-loved characters in a fresh and exciting adventure that has all the hallmarks of a Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler classic.
I was of course delighted when Axel came on board, and am even more so now that I've seen the brilliant sketches he's already done for the new book.
