Lin-Manuel Miranda: Portrait of an artist * Oregon ArtsWatch
"Lin-Manuel Miranda seems to have accomplished the impossible. In the brutal business world of Broadway shows, where only a handful of new plays recoup their costs, Miranda's hit musical In the Heights opened on Broadway in 2008 when he was just 28 years old, followed by the phenomenon known as in 2015, when he was 35. How did the sensitive child of two Puerto Rican immigrants who worked day and night become one of the most prolific and celebrated musical theater artists of our time?"
"From the moment he considered writing a book about Miranda, he says he envisioned one that would be "not praising or blaming but just about his education - about how he learned to do what he does - and maybe that could be of use to my students who want to have careers in the arts."
Lin-Manuel Miranda achieved major Broadway success at a young age, opening In the Heights on Broadway in 2008 at 28 and reaching another major milestone in 2015 at 35. Miranda grew up as the sensitive child of two Puerto Rican immigrants who worked long hours. Daniel Pollack-Pelzner framed a biographical project around Miranda's education, emphasizing collaboration and learning from teachers and mentors such as his grade school music teacher Ms. Ames and Stephen Sondheim. Pollack-Pelzner teaches at Portland State University, envisioned a nonjudgmental study of Miranda's artistic formation, and pitched a focus on the teachers who inspired him.
