Boston police responded to an assault and battery report at 190 W. Canton St. around 12:14 p.m. Officers found a victim crying and icing a red, multi-colored bruise on her left cheek; a suspect was standing on the sidewalk. The victim said an unknown man she passed on the street punched her three or four times; she pushed and kicked to push him away and said he may have referenced gangs. A witness said the suspect yelled at the victim to call the police. The suspect identified himself as 62-year-old Jose Edgardo Miranda-Martinez, who allegedly said he punched her because "this is the only way to ... stop the game they are playing with me." Miranda-Martinez provided a shelter identification card that could not be verified until booking and was charged with assault and battery and disorderly conduct. Medical personnel evaluated the victim, who refused further treatment.
