Suspected mortar shell brought into Essex police station prompts evacuation
"It appears the [device] was an empty fuel canister that resembles an aged and rusting mortar shell. Although officials said the resident appeared to be well-meaning, the incident caused significant disruption."
"I'm advising the public that suspected explosive devices should never be moved or transported. Instead, anyone who discovers a suspicious device should leave it in place and call 911."
A resident entered the Essex Police Department lobby with a suspicious device they discovered while metal detecting on their property, believing it to be an unexploded mortar shell. The building was immediately evacuated as a precaution, and firefighters staged outside while awaiting the Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad. The bomb squad arrived within an hour and used X-ray imaging to determine the device was not explosive, identifying it as an empty fuel canister resembling an aged, rusting mortar shell. Police Chief Thomas Shamshak Jr. urged the public never to move or transport suspected explosive devices, instead leaving them in place and calling 911.
