Brooklyn artists begin long road to recovery after 5-alarm warehouse fire
"Some of us lost a whole lifetime of work. It's not something you can just replace. I don't have the words for the feeling because I'm still in such shock. It doesn't really feel like it's happened yet."
"It's a terrible feeling, it's like losing a part of yourself. Each phase you make art, you're a different person during that time. The art I made 10 years ago isn't the same art I'm going to make now nor should it be. But then that's like a part of you gone in a way."
A large fire at the four-story former warehouse at 481 Van Brunt St. damaged studios and inventory belonging to the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition, Hot Wood Arts, and several small businesses. FDNY officials said the fire began Wednesday night and was stabilized by Thursday morning, and the cause remains under investigation. Hot Wood Arts studios located beneath the fire's origin sustained extensive damage and many artists likely lost significant bodies of work. The Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition had about 800 pieces in its section from nearly 500 artists and cannot yet retrieve or salvage most works because the building remains unsafe, though some art survived.
