Coney Island casino bid appears poised to fail as CAC members announce 'no' votes * Brooklyn Paper
""There are things we need in Coney Island, but a casino isn't one of them," he wrote. "And, let's be real: casinos exist to make money, not to fix our aging infrastructure or lift families out of poverty.""
""It is my responsibility to ensure that all stakeholders have the opportunity to make their voices heard on this matter through the Community Advisory Committee process mandated by New York State," Brannan said in June. "Then all of the local elected officials can make a decision collectively.""
Two-thirds of the Community Advisory Committee indicated they will vote against The Coney casino proposal, which would stop the project if four members follow through. Council Member Justin Brannan, Borough President Antonio Reynoso, state Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Spanton, and Marissa Solomon announced "no" votes. The project must receive four of six CAC "yes" votes to move to the next stage. Alex Sommer and Portia Henry have not declared positions. Brannan previously supported a rezoning to allow larger towers and partial street demapping but said a casino would not solve infrastructure or poverty. The Coney is described as a 1.6-million-square-foot complex with gaming, a hotel, and a convention center. The Coney declined to comment.
