Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights won the Greenest Block in Brooklyn competition, marking a historic achievement as the first block of mostly apartments to win. The community, led by Delean Ward and his father Derrick, a landscape professional, transformed the bustling street into an oasis filled with colorful flowers, herbs, and repurposed seating. This vibrant space includes self-watering planters and a variety of plants, promoting relaxation and community interaction amidst busy urban life. The area is now a popular spot for both locals and visitors, fostering an appreciation for urban gardening.
The Eastern Parkway block is filled with self watering planters with coneflowers, joe-pye-weed, black eyed Susans, and much more spilling out. Communal herb gardens painted bright blue offer basil and thyme to passersby.
Delean Ward was hard at work tending to a yellow celosia on the sidewalk of Eastern Parkway, where it joined other flowering plants offering shade and beauty.
That section of Eastern Parkway was crowned the winner of the borough's annual Greenest Block in Brooklyn competition, the first block of mostly apartment buildings to win in 29 years.
'It makes the block beautiful, people walk by and take pictures, they sit and relax between the flowers,' the older Ward said.
