Eastern Parkway Block is Greenest Block in Brooklyn
Briefly

The Eastern Parkway block, primarily residential, was celebrated as the winner of the Greenest Block in Brooklyn competition. This marks the first victory for a block of mostly apartment buildings in the competition's history. The community, led by Derrick Ward, has transformed the area with self-watering planters, communal herb gardens, and vibrant seating areas. The urban garden features diverse flora, contributing not only to aesthetics but also providing herbs and fruit. Many community members participated in the celebration, enjoying the fruits of their collective gardening efforts.
The sidewalk of the Eastern Parkway block is filled with self watering planters with coneflowers, joe-pye-weed, black eyed Susans, coleus, and much more spilling out.
Communal herb gardens painted bright blue offer basil and thyme to passersby, and tables made out of old construction materials and chairs that have been salvaged or repurposed offer places to relax.
Dozens, including many from other parts of the borough, had come to share in the celebration of urban gardening and community.
That section of Eastern Parkway was crowned the winner of the borough's annual Greenest Block in Brooklyn competition, the first block of mostly apartment buildings to win.
