Here's All You Need to Know About The 2025 NYC Primary Election
Briefly

New York City is preparing for early voting in the primary election from June 14 to June 22, allowing voters affiliated with a political party to choose candidates for mayor, City Council, and other important local positions. The 2021 elections saw record participation; however, general election turnout hit a historic low. New Yorkers have the option of ranking candidates due to the ranked choice voting system implemented in 2019, enhancing voter choice and candidate diversity. This primary is crucial for shaping the upcoming general election scheduled for November 4, 2025.
This year, voters can cast their ballot for a candidate running for mayor, all 51 seats in the City Council, borough president, city comptroller, public advocate and two of the city's five district attorneys, including Brooklyn.
In 2019, New Yorkers elected to use ranked choice voting, which passed with 73.6% support, enabling voters to rank up to five candidates in order of preference.
