"There's something powerful that happens when students step onto a stage and the entire community shows up for them. Events like this bring families, staff, and students together in a way that builds pride, connection, and a real sense of belonging."
"Dance gives our students a space to be themselves in a way they don't always get in other parts of their day. They're learning how to communicate without words, how to think creatively and solve problems, and how to process their emotions in a safe, supportive environment."
The Achievement First New York Dance Festival brought together over 700 students, families, and educators at AF Bushwick Middle School, showcasing student performances and master classes. Trashina Conner, a key organizer and dance teacher, emphasized the event's role in building community and pride. The festival expanded from nine schools last year to include more participants and professional workshops. Dance provides students with a unique outlet for self-expression, creativity, and emotional processing, enriching their educational experience.
