"When I think about when I was a child, what I needed, and now what I think about as an adult, I wish I had financial literacy at a younger age. Financial literacy is extremely important because we live in America, and you have to know how to get a house, how to balance a checkbook, how to manage credit, how to even manage debt when you come out of college."
"Excellence Boys, a PreK-8 school in Bedford-Stuyvesant, is leading the way as the first Uncommon charter middle school to offer this type of curriculum."
Excellence Boys Charter School is among the first in New York City to implement financial literacy education. The New York State Board of Regents has mandated personal finance education for all public school students from grades K-12. The curriculum will cover budgeting, saving, credit, and investing, starting with middle and high school students in the 2026-2027 school year and elementary students in 2027-2028. Principal Jermaine Issac emphasizes the importance of financial literacy for Black and Brown students, reflecting on his own experiences and the necessity of such education.
